FAQs
What are the ingredients?
Moroccan Black Soap: Water, Olive Oil, Potassium Hydroxide
Natural Eucalyptus oil is added to the Eucalyptus variant.
Marrok Mitt: Made from plant viscose
What does it smell & feel like?
Moroccan Black Soap
Black Soap has a rich, paste-like texture that lathers when worked with water. As the ingredients are as natural as possible, the paste doesn't froth and bubble - it's a natural low lather.
While it's known as 'Black Soap', the colour is a naturally earthy brownish green, reflecting the olives it's made from.
When mixed with water, the paste can become a little slippery - like most soaps! Lather first between hands and then apply to your body. You'll get familiar with it very quickly.
The Original variant carries the scent of the organic olives from which the soap is made. Earthy but subtle, the scent does not linger on the skin after rinsing.
The Eucalyptus variant has a distinct yet subtle scent of eucalyptus, adding a fresh, clean note to the ritual without overpowering the senses.
The Marrok Mitt
The same as those used in hammams in Morocco, this is a medium-texture mitt. Adjust the pressure as you scrub to suit your skin.
How do I use the Black Soap & Mitt?
Black Soap as a daily wash:
Take a small amount of Black Soap and lather between wet hands. Massage over damp skin in the shower or bath, then leave on for a few moments before rinsing thoroughly.
Use daily or as needed as a deeply cleansing soap paste.
Avoid the eye area.
As a Body Scrub routine:
Use Moroccan Black Soap with the Marrok Mitt for a traditional hammam-inspired exfoliation ritual at home.
Step 1: Warm & wet the skin
Begin in a warm shower. Allow the shower space to steam up and wet skin with warm water.
Step 2: Apply Black Soap
Take a small amount of Moroccan Black Soap and lather between wet hands.
Massage over damp skin, applying all over the body. Black Soap is low-lather,
so it’s normal not to have a lot of suds. Leave on skin for around 5 minutes to
help soften and prepare the skin.
Step 3: Rinse
Rinse the Black Soap thoroughly from the body before exfoliating.
Step 4: Exfoliate with the Marrok Mitt
Wet the Marrok Mitt and squeeze out excess water. Using firm strokes, buff the skin to lift away dry, dull skin and reveal smoother-feeling skin. You may see small rolls of dead skin on the mitt.
How Often To Use?
As a body exfoliation routine with the Marrok Mitt, we suggest using weekly or fortnightly, depending on your skin.
Moroccan Black Soap can also be used as a daily wash. It can be used on the body and face (avoiding eyes).
Use with care
Do not use the Marrok Mitt on broken skin, irritated skin or freshly shaved
skin. Adjust pressure to suit your skin.
Why do I rinse the soap off before the mitt?
The Black Soap does the heavy lifting - it softens skin and help lift dead skin from the surface.
It prepares the skin to be scrubbed with the mitt.
The mitt scrubs away what the soap has already lifted.
Once the soap has done its job, you rinse it off so there is some friction between the mitt and your skin - that helps the mitt scrub away the lifted dead skin.
Is Black Soap safe for sensitive skin?
Many of our customers have found Black Soap suits their sensitive skin.
We suggest testing a small patch before use.
Can I use the mitt on my face?
The mitt is primarily for the body.
You can use the mitt on the face, but we highly recommend testing a small area first and always being very careful.
Do not apply the same pressure to your face as you do to your body.
Is it good for fake tan?
Can I use it before fake tan?
Yes, it can be used before tanning to help smooth the skin and remove old tan. Use at least the day before tanning and follow your tan product’s instructions.
Can I use it while I have fake tan on?
The Black Soap alone can lift fake tan from skin. We suggest avoiding the use of Black Soap and avoiding exfoliation until you are ready to remove the fake tan - it's an excellent fake tan remover!
How do I care for the mitt?
Rinse the mitt thoroughly after use.
You can put the mitt in a normal machine wash cycle and hang to dry between uses.
Dry outside.
Do not tumble dry.
How is the product sustainable?
The Black Soap is made from organic olives which are grown and harvested by women's co-operatives in Morocco.
The Black Soap is made in Morocco by producers who have European certification as organic, sustainable and cruelty-free.
